THE BEST WAYS TO PROTECT YOUR HAIR FROM THE SUN
PROTECT IN THE GLOW
It’s definitely hot outside and we’re all feeling the heat at the moment. Summer has landed and we are literally basking in sunshine. But while we can use protection on our skin to soak up the sun’s rays; the same can’t be said of our hair. So what damage can really be done to our hair when it’s sunny? Well, as it turns out…quite a bit. UVA and UVB rays emitted from the sun can damage the hair cuticle. This is the outer protective layer that strengthens and protects the hair shaft. Prolonged exposure can lead to discolouration, dry and brittle strands and rough and frizzy hair. All things we actively try and avoid.
Unless you’re hibernating for the season it’ll be pretty hard to stay out of the sun so protection is key. Lighter, blonder hair and Afro hair is particularly vulnerable.
It would be wise to use hair masks once a week whatever the weather but your hair can really dry out in the heat. A deep nourishing mask will act as a preventative measure. If you suffer from split ends you may even want to dampen the ends with an Argon oil or a similar beauty protector oil before your hair is exposed to the sun.
Coconut oil has a particularly impressive ability to protect hair and skin from the harmful rays of the sun. Some experts agree that coconut oil contains a natural SPF and contains antioxidants that provide further protection. It is advised that coconut oil should not be used in place of your regular sun screen on your skin. However, using coconut oil on your hair once a week will not only stop split ends but shield it from harmful rays.
MAKE MINE A LARGE ONE
It sounds like an obvious one but hats are a great way to ensure both your hair and scalp is protected from the sun. And it’s bigger the better when it comes to protection. Big floppy sun hat are ideal and they look pretty stylish too.
If you swim regularly always ensure that you rinse your hair properly as chlorinated water is very drying. The hair shaft absorbs the chlorine, stripping it of it’s natural lubricant. Always ensure that you wet your hair with clean water before entering the pool which prevents the hair from absorbing as much chlorine and use plenty of conditioner afterwards.
COLOURED HAIR PROTECTION
Coloured hair is at high risk in the high sun. Not only do you have to worry about discolouration but your coloured hair is more likely to dry out. Look for protective treatments designed for coloured hair. Particularly if you have blonde hair which is already more susceptible to the sun’s harmful UV rays.
Be safe in the sun and enjoy the weather with extra protection for the summer!
